Reflections on the Goldman Sachs 10KSBUK “Thinking Differently” Event

Yesterday, I attended the Goldman Sachs 10KSBUK “Thinking Differently” event, a day filled with thought-provoking discussions, inspiring stories, and meaningful connections. The sessions explored some of the most pressing issues facing businesses today, from the role of AI to generational shifts in the workforce and lessons in resilience from the world of elite sports. Here are my key takeaways from an extraordinary day.

A Revolution Like No Other: What Businesses Need to Know About AI: Sir Anthony Seldon

Sir Anthony Seldon’s session on AI was both a wake-up call and an invitation to think differently. His opening remark, “we have two years to save learning,” was a stark reminder of how rapidly technology is reshaping education and business. He emphasised that while AI is powerful, its role should not be to simply provide answers but to help people solve problems and think critically.

For businesses, Sir Anthony’s advice was clear: focus on what makes us human. While AI can streamline repetitive tasks, the human touch—empathy, care, storytelling, and relationships—will be the ultimate differentiator. Leaders of the future must be capable of building trust and a compelling narrative.

In essence, AI is not a threat but a tool. Like how the washing machine revolutionised domestic life, AI can free up time for businesses to deepen their focus on human values, creating a competitive edge in an increasingly automated world.

Intergenerational Workforces and Inheritocracy: Dr. Eliza Filby

Dr. Eliza Filby’s session shed light on the generational dynamics shaping modern workplaces. Her exploration of Baby Boomers, Generation X, Millennials, and Generation Z revealed fascinating insights into how these groups interact and what motivates them.

One striking point was the rise of “Inheritocracy,” the concept that younger generations are increasingly reliant on family support, like the “bank of mum and dad,” to achieve milestones like buying a home. This shift profoundly impacts workplace motivation, particularly for those under 30 who value purpose and growth over monetary rewards.

To bridge the generational divide, businesses must embrace intergenerational collaboration. Initiatives like reverse mentoring, where younger employees teach older ones about technology while learning from their experience, can foster understanding and mutual growth. As Generation Alpha grows up immersed in AI, nurturing their human skills—empathy, communication, and collaboration—will be critical.

Mastering the Margins: Insights from the Pinnacle of Sport: Dame Sarah Storey

Dame Sarah Storey’s story of resilience and determination was truly inspiring. As a Paralympian who transitioned from swimming to cycling and recently secured her 19th gold medal, her journey is a testament to the power of adaptability and focus.

She highlighted the importance of community, even in solo endeavours, and shared her approach to overcoming setbacks: “Accept the situation you’re in, work out ways to improve it, and make a plan.” Her emphasis on marginal gains—the small, incremental improvements that add up to significant results—was a powerful reminder to focus on our own growth rather than being distracted by others.

Her perspective on balancing personal and professional roles was particularly relatable. Whether defending a title at the Olympics or being a “super mum,” her message was clear: resilience, focus, and community are key to achieving greatness.

A Day of Connection and Inspiration

The day concluded with an opportunity to explore the creative scribe boards from previous sessions and network with fellow alumni from the GS10KSBUK program. Reconnecting with members of my growth group from cohort 16 was a highlight, reminding me of the strength and support within this incredible community.

Moving Forward

This event was more than just a day of talks; it was a catalyst for rethinking how we approach challenges and opportunities in business. From leveraging AI to fostering intergenerational collaboration and embracing resilience, the lessons shared by these exceptional speakers will undoubtedly shape how I move forward, both personally and professionally.

For businesses like Marshall Wolfe, these insights reinforce the importance of staying human-centred while embracing the tools and trends shaping the future.

Here’s to thinking differently and creating a future that’s both innovative and deeply human.
