I can imagine you’re thinking, how do Rainbows, Unicorns and Security Analysts all link together? In the words of Martin Russ to become a great Security Analyst “you need to change your mindset so you can ride the unicorn all the way to the end of the rainbow”.
Last week, I was lucky enough to participate in a knowledge call put on by Adastral Woman in Tech which was hosted by Martin Russ (Ex-CISSP). Martin shared the skills and thinking out of the box mindset required to be successful in a Security Analyst role.
Security Analysts are the superheroes in the data and tech world; they stop and prevent attacks on extremely private data. They help put in preventatives to ensure the ‘there’s no way that could ever happen’ doesn’t occur!
When thinking about what a Security Analyst needs to know it’s easier to ask what they don’t need to know. They need to have some knowledge on just about EVERYTHING! Ranging from hardware to software to networking to cloud to communications to physical security and cryptography (just to mention a few). To learn all of this Martin recommended specific CISSP books, he said these were a great tool to help combat the 6-hour multiple choice exam!
If you’re wanting to become a cyber superhero a CISSP certification is a good place to start. CISSP stands for Certified Information System Security Professional. Likely holders of this will be people in positions such as a Security Analyst, Director of Security and a Security Architect.
Security analysts have very unique roles; you are looking at extremely private data and looking at information that a client NEVER wants to be exploited. In order to be successful in this career you need to hold the qualities of the CIA triad, these are considered the most crucial aspects of security. The triangle includes confidentiality (ensuring all data is kept private), integrity (assuring the data is honest, consistent and accurate) and availability (the guarantee of reliable access to the information). As with any triangle, the CIA triad is the same; “a triangle shape is only strong if you have all three sides”.
