Y Passion

Congratulations to my old employers – Courtyard by Marriott on an inspiring new ad campaign.

They have, in my view, nailed this ad and are genuinely trying to embrace some of the values of the much-maligned Gen Y’.

Millennials are now very present in the work place and generally accepted to have a different work mind-set to my Gen X work companions (those of us born primarily early 60s to late 70s). I joined Courtyard by Marriott on their Grad. Scheme in 1995. We were told as echoed in the advert “Work hard. Clock in, clock out. Do it again and again. You may not like it, but that’s work. That’s just how it is”. Now Millennials are all about pursuing passion, chasing dreams and enjoying work, not climbing a ladder.

We have, like the father in the advert been shown another way – to work on something you are passionate about; enjoy work and not see it ‘as a means to an end’.

The advert concludes with copy saying: “Passion moves us forward. It’s how you think. It’s how we think.”

Well done Courtyard by Marriott marketing team – even brought a tear to my eye!

Marshall Wolfe works with clients to develop talent attraction, talent on boarding and training programmes.  We recognise the need for Accelerated training plans and Agile Performance Management to Adapt to the changing make up of our work force. Ninety-one percent of Millennials (born between 1977-1997) expect to stay in a job for less than three years, according to the Future Workplace Multiple Generations @ Work” survey of 1,189 employees and 150 managers. Yet some of the UK’s largest business have two-year graduate induction programmes!
